All my friends were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up. I didn’t feel the desire to be a fireman or a doctor or a lawyer or anything like that. I didn’t know exactly what it was I’d be doing, but I knew that if there was a profession that involved dogs, I wanted to be a part of it. Then I thought back to when we got our first television set. As a very little boy, I had been mesmerized by the reruns of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin, always in black and white and dubbed in Spanish. Because I had grown up with dogs in a very natural environment, I knew that of course Lassie didn’t really understand the words that Timmy was saying.
Let’s say the little guy in the cafeteria is having a bad day. He’s failed two tests in a row and is in a weak state of mind. He happens to look up and accidentally catch the eye of the bully. Maybe the bully was just minding his own business, but 48 as soon as he picks up on the weaker guy’s diminished energy, the whole dynamic between them changes in a split second. In the animal kingdom, that’s called survival of the fittest. Let’s take this concept beyond the school lunchroom and think about our society as whole.
What I’m about to share is the truth of my life experiences. These are the things I have personally learned and experienced and observed, working with thousands of dogs for well over twenty years. I do believe from the deepest place in my heart that it is my mission to help dogs, and to spend my life learning everything they have to teach me. I see my career among dogs as an eternal education. I am the student, and they are my teachers. Let them help teach you what they’ve taught me. They’ve helped me to understand that what dogs really need isn’t always what we want to give them.
