HOSPITAL I N F E C T I O N Infection is more readily spread from person to person in hospital than in the community outside for some patients are potentially a source of disease and others are particularly susceptible to infection since their natural defences are damaged. Some patients are admitted to hospital because they are suffering from an infectious disease, such as diphtheria, which may be passed on to other patients or staff if adequate precautions are not taken.

Immunity to a disease may depend on antibodies which destroy or which aid in the destruction of micro-organisms or on antibodies which neutralise a toxic product of the bacterium. The former is k n o w n as ANTIBACTERIAL i m m u n i t y and the latter as A N T I T O X I C immunity. Which one or the other is the most important depends on whether the major damage caused by the disease is due to bacterial invasion or to the effect of toxins. Acquired i m m u n i t y can be conveniently divided into several types.
